The McBurney YMCA is seeking a Sports Instructor (Pickleball) who will be responsible for working with adults to promote the enjoyment of pickleball sports activities while improving physical competence, developing confidence, and teaching basic skill development. The overall major functions of the Sports Instructor also include:
- Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants.
- Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with all constituents, including, but not limited to, program participants and parents/guardians.
- Create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.
- Encourage a lifetime participation in sports and physical activity.
- Embody the YMCA Core Values.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with the supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each program session.
- As needed, create a written lesson plan for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive.
- Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines (i.e., ratio, attendance)
- Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of adults in the sports program by providing close supervision of all activities.
- Plan and lead fun, challenging, and physical activities for participants.
- Create an atmosphere in which all participants can have fun, are safe, and learn the importance of good, principled athletics.
- Complete program documentation as assigned (registration, incident/accident reports, attendance, and sign-in/sign-out sheets).
- Maintain open communication and an excellent rapport with participants, staff, and members.
- Respond to inquiries and requests for information.
- Promotes interest and participation in sports programs through events, outreach, and informational programs.
- Assess the performance and progress of participants.
- Perform Coach/Official duties as needed.
- Actively participate in all training sessions and meetings.
- Teaching pickleball classes, private lessons, and clinics for adults, with the possibility of supporting pickleball leagues as well.
- Responsible for ensuring proper equipment is ordered and maintained with support from the Healthy Lifestyle Director.
- Responsible for keeping attendance of all classes and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all.
- Responsible for greeting all patrons with a positive attitude and always representing the McBurney pickleball program in a professional manner.
- Plan, promote, implement, supervise, and coordinate all pickleball games, practices, and lessons.
- Create opportunities for members to play competitively against other teams.
- Provide communication to and from the office, staff, and participants.
- Assign times and locations for each team practice and game.
- Provide pickleball players and members with the highest level of customer service.
- Instruct students on the proper techniques, skills, and strategies.
- Ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience instructing pickleball.
- Pickleball playing ability 3.0 minimum level or higher.
- Knowledge of grading system, rules, and coaching pickleball players of all levels.
- Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
- Ability to work with older adults is highly preferred.
- Current Child Abuse Prevention, First Aid/CPR certifications.
- YMCA Coaching 101 Training (must attend w/in 90 days of start date).
