JOB TITLE: Assistant General Manager

SALARY RANGE: $65,000 - $70,000 annually + monthly bonus

The Assistant General Manager is responsible for carrying out Active Wellness's commitment to service its members in the best fitness environment possible with the friendliest staff, most educated members, cleanest facility, most ethical business practices, and state-of-the-art equipment. This person is responsible for helping the General Manager with the daily operations of the club. The Assistant General Manager is responsible for being fully knowledgeable about operations and emergency procedures while supporting policies and procedures established by Active Wellness. This person also plays a key role in affecting membership sales and attrition rates. The Assistant General Manager supports the hiring, training, and management of staff. They are also responsible for ensuring staff under their oversight are well-trained, friendly, and delivering consistently against department goals and KPIs.

Specific Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Customer Service

  • Review the schedule for the service desk team and be responsible for maintaining staff coverage
  • Ensure legendary customer service and friendly, knowledgeable staff
  • Provide feedback on operational supply needs to Operations Supervisor on a weekly basis
  • Be responsive to member feedback including managing the member feedback platform
  • Ensure member information boards are up to date with current program offerings
  • Works a minimum of 1-2 shifts per week at the desk (10 hours maximum) and support as an emergency substitute as needed
  • Review and audit training of the service desk staff on how to complete a membership sale
  • Audit daily Opening, Closing, and Facility Checklists
  • Review member check-in reports and sport team rosters
  • Ensure the Member Services Supervisor completes weekly Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) courtesy calls to membership accounts on hold
  • Provide oversight of all member services processes for membership tours, holds, cancellations

Fitness Membership Sales

  • Provides continuous sales support, education, and training to staff
  • Achieve monthly budgeted fitness membership sales goals
  • Audit Guest Tracking and Guest Leads Reports from the previous day to ensure report accuracy and staff compliance; Utilize reports to prioritize lead follow up
  • Ensure staff is following lead management expectations
  • Coach staff weekly on individual and club sales performance, managing staff to achieve a closing ratio of 60% and an overall sales closing rate of 75%
  • Ensure that all new members are offered a personal orientation to the club and a 60-day check-in
  • Develop relationships with members and encourage member referrals

Facility Operations & Housekeeping

  • Review set schedule for Facilities and Housekeeping teams and be responsible for maintaining staff coverage
  • Ensure a spotless club environment and handle maintenance issues immediately
  • Regular audits with the Operations Supervisor to ensure ordering of operational supplies is within budget guidelines
  • Complete monthly and quarterly Operational Standards Evaluation, audit and resolve pending issues
  • Ensure preventative maintenance schedules are followed
  • Assist with keeping the club well-stocked and clean
  • Conduct a physical inspection of the entire club at regular intervals throughout the day; Abate hazards

Cafe

  • Review the schedule for the Cafe team and be responsible for maintaining staff coverage
  • Work at the Cafe as scheduled/needed and serve as an emergency substitute
  • Regularly audits the ordering of supplies within budget guidelines with the Operations Supervisor
  • Audit daily inventory audit to control shrinkage with the Operations Supervisor
  • Set weekly bar specials and coordinate weekly events to drive bar traffic (i.e. trivia nights)
  • Audit Opening, Closing, and Daily Checklists from the previous day
Requirements

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • 2 years of management experience in hospitality/fitness or related industry
  • Experience in fitness and wellness environment, excellent communication skills, leadership and management skills, customer service oriented, results-oriented, computer skills, ability to multitask, experience in leading a team, and commitment to the fitness industry
  • 2-year college degree or equivalent education and experience
  • Strong verbal communication skills, management skills, customer service oriented, results-oriented, basic computer skills, ability to multitask, experience in leading multiple teams
  • Must be detail-oriented, solution-focused, organized, and highly responsive with a commitment to customer service
  • Experience with interviewing, hiring, and training direct reports
  • AED/CPR/First Aid Certified
  • Proof of citizenship or legal status

Physical and Working Conditions

  • Required to work evenings (varies) and one weekend day each week and be flexible with a schedule based on season cycle and club needs
  • Ability to take the responsibility for the health and safety of others
  • Ability to stand for several hours in the same shift; ability to lift 25 lbs
